Scaling back of Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs (NNF 2015/037)

While emergency measures are still in place for Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs, the Department of Agriculture is scaling back the extent of the measures thanks to industry take-up of pre-shipment treatments and the demonstrated effectiveness of these treatments.

The department is satisfied that the risk period for the pest has substantially passed and that sufficient management measures are in place onshore to reduce any residual risks to acceptable levels.  As a result, the following activities will cease:
  1. Thermal fogging (e.g. Py Fog) will no longer automatically be conducted on vessels carrying pre-treated break bulk cargo. The department has made this decision in light of the decreased risk of vessel infestation and acknowledges that most target break bulk cargo has been treated prior to shipment.  If there is cargo on board that is not pre-treated or there is evidence of infestation, the vessel will be referred for additional assessment.
  2. Target goods will no longer be subject to post-treatment verification inspections. The department now has sufficient evidence that the prescribed treatments for brown marmorated stink bugs are effective so this measure is no longer required.

Please note, pre-shipment treatment of target cargo is still required for vessels arriving in Australia on or before 30 April 2015.

Please submit all documentation (pre-shipment treatment certificates, commercial documentation, cargo reports/manifests) to the department at least 48 hours prior to vessel arrival.  This will assist with early clearance of cargo and minimise potential disruption and costs on the wharf. All documentation can be sent to [email protected] or lodged via the Cargo Online Lodgement System (COLS).
